First found in Lanarkshire where they were recorded as a family of great antiquity seated at the Forest of Paisley in that shire.

Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: William Brewster who arrived in the "Mayflower" and settled in Plymouth in 1620, he was from the Essex branch of the family, and one of his descendants was Henry Calvin Brewster of Rochester, New York.
